Welcome to the Department of Economics.

Faculty of Economics was started with the opening up of the College in December, 1971 i.e. from the Session July 1971 – June 1972. At the very beginning, Economics had been one of the six subjects that got the affiliation from the University of Calcutta to teach at the Pre-University and Undergraduate Degree(BA Pass) levels [vide Memo. No. C/4346/210 Affl/10th. November 1971]. In 1972, the Department got affiliation from the University of Calcutta to teach ‘Economics’ at the Undergraduate Commerce level [vide Memo No. C/313/210 Affl/ 8th. September 1972]. Due to the Education Policy of the State Government, economics as a subject was taught in Higher Secondary Course (in Commerce Stream only)for the period 1976 to 2002. From the Session 1996 – 1997, Honours course in Economics in undergraduate degree level was introduced in the Department being duly affiliated by the University of Calcutta. In summary, the department now teaches economics in BA as well as B. Sc. (General) degree course, both General and Honours levels in B.Com. degree courses and Economics (Honours) at B.Sc. degree level. For the last four years or so, students have taken admission in Economics Honours course and students are performing well in both old and new CBCS system.
